TRACE GUTHRIE

Trace Guthrie has emerged as a sculptor of exceptional talent.  He has created hundreds of pieces over his 39 year career as a professional.  He has five outdoor works in Houston, his hometown. He received his first commission at age 23 of Dickens’ 'Oliver Twist '  in Hermann Park.  A design of five flying geese with 10- foot wing-spans sweep across the facade of a Houston high-rise.  In the Medical Center, a life size portrait memorial was placed outside of M. D. Anderson Hospital in the rose garden.   A composition of creatures native to Texas stands near the Galleria.  Sam Houston State University  in Huntsville commissioned Guthrie to create  a life size portrait  of the first President of the Republic of Texas, Sam Houston.

Trace has consulted and assisted in building large bronze works with other established sculptors that are now in place across the country along with two in Europe.   He studied art at the University of Houston.

His classes are informal but highly instructional.  Beginners to the more advanced students develop their individual projects using water based clay learning some tricks, shortcuts, and preventions in engineering the forms.  Working with oil base clay on medal armatures for molds and bronze castings is a possibility for those who want to indulge.  On request, plaster press molds will be taught for making reproductions for wall-hanging relief sculptures and full dimensional work.
